With the offering of the two maritime courses, the Maritime Education Department was then installed which later on became College of Maritime Transportation now Maritime Academy. Offering of the maritime course has contributed to the economic impact not only in Butuan City but in the whole Caraga region. Over the years, the enrolment has shown a significant growth in view of the persisting demand in the maritime industry.

The other strategic directions SJIT has set for the Maritime Academy is its competitive advantage in seeking national accreditation from PACUCOA (Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation) and in implementing the outcomesbased education (OBE). At present, the two (2) maritime programs – marine transportation and marine engineering are Level II accredited with First Reaccreditation status. Its judicious implementation of the OBE made the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to consider the school as one of the six (6) maritime schools being piloted for OBE implementation in the country.
Today, the school takes pride of the new campus in Cubi-cubi, Nasipit, Agusandel Norte. It has a highly modernized structure that can cater to over 1,000 students. Aside from the Academic Building, it has a Dormitel inside the campus which provides a world class accommodation. The campus situated by the sea is now add-on attraction in the locality.
The SJIT Maritime Academy Campus has already accommodated third year maritime students during the second semester of academic year 2013-2014. The state-of-the-art laboratory facilities such as the Deck Simulators and Engine Simulators are now of great use to the students.
